Non-Hormonal Treatment for Hot Flashes Now Available

Author: Manisha Purohit, M.D., FACOG

In the past, women who regularly experienced disruptive hot flashes had just one option: estrogen therapy. Today, new non-hormonal treatments for hot flashes are making their way onto the market after receiving FDA clearance this past summer. This is great news, as an alternative treatment for hot flashes has been long overdue. After all, many physicians and patients have expressed concerned about the use of estrogen and progesterone to reduce hot flashes.

How do non-hormonal treatments for hot flashes work?

The latest in non-hormonal treatments is a drug that contains paroxetine. Paroxetine is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor. This drug, which is also used as an antidepressant, has been prescribed for several years by physicians. However, its specific use as a non-hormonal treatment for hot flashes has just now received FDA clearance.

It’s worth noting that there are two other (unexpected) non-hormonal treatments for hot flashes: soy and hypnosis. Studies have shown that soy can reduce hot flashes by 26 percent, while hypnosis can reduce hot flashes by up to 74 percent. (These studies are limited; substantial evidence has not yet been provided to indicate that either alternative treatment for hot flashes should be physician-prescribed.)

Am I a candidate for non-hormonal treatment?

If you suffer from moderate to intense hot flashes, then treatment could be right for you. Also, if you cannot – or do not wish to – use hormonal therapy for treatment of hot flashes, then this alternative treatment could be right for you.

Where is this alternative treatment for hot flashes available?

This non-hormonal treatment for hot flashes is widely available now that it has received FDA clearance. However, because of its newness your physician may not be aware of the use of paroxetine as a hot flash treatment option. Talk to your OB-GYN or physician for more information.
